University of Suffolk
ENVIRONMENTAL GRAPHICS | SIGNAGE | DESIGN
We have been working with The University of Suffolk since 2020, every project is different – we like that! UOS sought to enhance the campus experience by improving signage and environmental graphics across its diverse facilities. The challenge was to create solutions that not only provided effective wayfinding but also contributed to the aesthetic appeal and identity of the campus.
Transforming Identity at University of Suffolk’s DigiTech Centre
Challenge:
The University of Suffolk, in partnership with BT, sought to establish the DigiTech Centre as a hub for education, research, and professional development in cutting-edge fields such as Cyber Security, Data Science & AI, Smart Living, Network, and Software Engineering. The challenge was to create a visual communication system that seamlessly integrated with the existing University of Suffolk (UOS) identity and logo while also serving as an effective wayfinding system across the campus.
Solution:
We devised a unique approach inspired by coded communication systems and tessellated geometry. Leveraging the UOS logo as a foundation, we tessellated the bottom corner triangle to create a grid of triangles. With 256 unique permutations, each character in the alphabet, along with numbers and punctuation, was assigned a specific combination of triangles. This coded design system formed the basis of a visual identity that encouraged curiosity and discovery.
The system was implemented across various touch points within the DigiTech Centre, including illuminated signage, wall graphics, wayfinding elements, cafe environments, window manifestations, reports, and stationery. By maintaining consistency with the UOS branding system, we ensured a cohesive visual identity that resonated with the broader campus community.
Collaboration:
We collaborated closely with Hudson Group for the manufacturing and installation of signage, ensuring high-quality execution that aligned with our design vision. Additionally, working alongside the @uosunion, we developed an identity for the new shop within the DigiTech Centre, extending the branding across uniforms, signage, and future SU collateral.
Impact:
The implementation of the coded communication system not only enhanced wayfinding within the DigiTech Centre but also sparked interest and engagement among students, faculty, and visitors. The integration of the system across various touch points created a cohesive and immersive experience, reinforcing the identity of the DigiTech Centre as a leading institution in digital technology and innovation.
UOS STUDENT UNION HQ AND SHOP
Working alongside the @uosunion we began by creating an identity for the new shop which works across uniforms, signage and future SU collateral and compliments their existing SU brand identity. The 30 x window installation displays a map that includes Ipswich and the surrounding area of East Anglia, across the North Sea to Holland and the Netherlands.
