Earth Day inspired ‘City of Parks’ proposal
This morning we attended the Earth Day Conference at University of Suffolk. A highlight was an impassioned talk by Faye Harburt from Greener Ipswich, who’s on a mission to plant a Green Trail on a route between Christchurch Park and the Waterfront. We feel, as residents of Ipswich, that we have a lot to be grateful for, we’re so lucky to be surrounded by green space, and our town has once again been awarded Tree City of the World Status, 3rd year running.
For a while, re-branding Ipswich has been on our minds. We think that Ipswich has lost its clear identity over time. Redefining what Ipswich stands for and reigniting a sense of pride and purpose within the community has real value. Today seems like the right time to put it out there:
Define Ipswich as a City of Parks
We envision a town where nature thrives alongside urban development, with abundant green spaces and clean air. A bold plan to transform Ipswich into a model of sustainability, prioritising the well-being of both residents and the environment.
1. Greening Ipswich:
Connect and enhance our existing parks with lush greenery, creating vibrant green corridors that weave through the heart of our town. Trees will be the cornerstone of this transformation, providing shade, beauty, and sanctuary for both people and wildlife.
2. Sustainable Transportation:
Prioritise pedestrians and cyclists over cars in the town centre. By introducing an Ultra Low Emission Zone and reallocating road space to trees and green infrastructure, we will create a safer, cleaner, and more inviting environment for active transportation.
3. Renewable Energy Revolution:
Through the establishment of an Ipswich Energy company, make renewable power accessible to all. Every council house and building should be equipped with solar panels, and new developments should be required to meet strict renewable energy standards.
4. People-Centred Development:
We envision a town centre that prioritises people over cars. Development projects should be contingent upon meeting a tree quota and incorporating green spaces into their designs. By creating vibrant, pedestrian-friendly spaces, we will foster a sense of community and belonging for all who call Ipswich home.
5. Environmental Stewardship:
Be responsible stewards of our natural resources, preserving and protecting them for future generations. Through education, outreach, and collaboration, empower Ipswich residents to take action against climate change and environmental degradation.
Could this plan be a reality? We know it’s not a simple process, but we think it’s better to set off with a big bold vision rather than a compromise. We’d love to redefine Ipswich as a City of Parks, prioritising sustainability and community well-being.
