Dip a Day Challenge for Surfers Against Sewage.

Throughout October, I’ve been taking part in the Dip a Day Challenge, raising money and awareness for Surfers Against Sewage. Living near the coast in Suffolk and with family in Cornwall, the sea has always been part of my life. But our waters are in trouble. And as ever, it seems we (people) are the problem.

⚠️ Plastic pollution
⚠️ Fertiliser run-off
⚠️ Untreated sewage

This month, we’ve dipped at 6:30-7:30 am in Felixstowe, watched the light change over the weeks and dipped in ice-cold baths when the sea wasn’t an option. It’s definitely better with people, friends and family joining in (still 1 week to go if you’re tempted?).

We live in Suffolk, affectionately known as the Sunrise Coast. It’s the driest county in England. Over the past few weeks, it hasn’t rained once in the mornings. That’s worrying.

We’ve also kept an eye on the Clean Seas app (from Surfers Against Sewage). Not once has the pollution level shown as unsafe, a reassuring sign that our local waters are, for now, in good health.

I’ve hit my fundraising target. A massive thank you to everyone who supported us! The challenge is energising, motivating and worth every chilly start. Both Tim and I plan to continue once a week.

At WHAT, Sustainability isn’t just something we think about at work; it starts with how we live. Saying something and doing something are very different things. If you want to champion the environment, you have to live it: the choices you make, who you work with and how you use your voice to encourage others to act.
